MEDIA REPORTS: GRADUATION CEREMONY 2016 AT…

SSST CAMPUS LECTUREA: MR. ROY GUTMAN

Date: March 21st, 2017

It was a great honour and pleasure to host such a prominent expert and a renowned journalist as a guest lecturer at SSST, Mr. Roy Gutman. Mr. Gutman did us the honour to welcome him as the official guest of the University and have him stay with us for a few days.

On Tuesday, March 7, 2017, Mr Gutman delivered a lecture at SSST for our students, faculty, staff, guests from other universities and institutions and all other interested parties on the topic: Unlearned Lessons of the post-Cold War era: From Bosnia to Syria. A very dynamic and interesting Q&A session and a reception in our restaurant followed the lecture.

This has certainly been a unique opportunity to hear genuine stories about global and our recent past, as well as individual and personal stories that shape modern history. Mr Gutman shared the challenges and responsibilities that go with his profession. He didn't hide how thrilled he was to be introduced to our medical students and scholarship recipients who were brought from Syria to Sarajevo to study at SSST, and also to our high-school students from the SSST Gymnasium.

Gutman's honors include the Pulitzer Prize for international reporting on the war in B&H, the George Polk Award for foreign reporting, the Selden Ring Award for investigative reporting, and a special Human Rights in Media Award from the International League for Human Rights. While a diplomatic correspondent at Newsweek, he shared the Edgar Allan Poe award of the White House correspondents association

Gutman was previously employed by the Reuters news agency, serving in BonnViennaBelgradeLondon, and Washington. He served as Bureau Chief for EuropeState Department Correspondent, and Chief Capitol Hill Reporter. He has been a Jennings Randolph senior fellow at the United States Institute of Peace.

Roy Gutman is the chairman of the Crimes of War Project, an attempt to bring together reporters and legal scholars to increase awareness of the laws of war. His pocket guide to war crimesCrimes of War: What the Public Should Know, co-edited with David Rieff, was published by W.W. Norton in 1999 with a second edition in 2007. He was named one of "50 visionaries who are changing your world" by the Utne Reader in November–December 2008 Profile.

We are always open and glad to host experts from all over the world and particularly proud of this collaboration. Many thanks to those who participated in the organisation of this lecture and to the media representatives who covered the occasion.
