MEDIA REPORTS: GRADUATION CEREMONY 2016 AT…

GUEST LECTURE: Vanja Ibrahimbegović-Tihak, Article 10 of the ECH - Freedom of Expression

Date: May 4th, 2017

On Thursday, May 4, 2017 SSST had  the pleasure to host another expert as guest lecturer at the Department of PSIR, Ms Vanja Ibrahimbegović-Tihak, Research Analyst in MEASURE-BiH.

She focused her lecture on Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) dealing with freedom of expression from a journalist's perspective. Freedom of expression constitutes one of the essential foundations of a democratic society and one of the basic conditions for its progress and development. The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) interprets the right to freedom of expression and information as guaranteed under Article 10 of the ECHR. In its case law related to journalism and media freedom, the ECtHR has consistently emphasized the essential function that the press fulfils in a democratic society. Without such protection the press would be unable to play its vital role of "public watchdog" in a democracy. Finally, Article 10 of the ECHR is a qualified right and as such the right to freedom of expression may be limited (such restrictions must still be in accordance with law and be necessary and proportionate).

This lecture was organized for our PSIR (with minor in International Law) students and thanks to the initiative of Professor Taida Šarkinović from the Department of PSIR.
