More then the fund-raising arm of the Sarajevo School of Science and Technology, the MET Foundation seeks to become one of this country’s leading organizations providing opportunities to young people in form of scholarships, support to small-business projects, grants and development projects in the fields of science, humanities and arts.
The MET Foundation (Mladi i Ekonomska Tranzicija / Youth and Economic Transition) was founded in 1998 by Dr. Ejup Ganić, who led a group of executives from Sarajevo Chamber of Commerce and Privredna Banka of Bosnia and Herzegovina in establishing an organization with the aim of helping young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the difficult period of economic transition and post war recovery. The initial grants from Islamic Development Bank (Jeddah), The Government of Holland, Ousseimi Foundation (Switzerland) and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (Germany), helped to organize and run a program of training courses and seminars for young entrepreneurs and professionals, as well as publish a step-by-step guide on how to start and run your own business. These activities were transferred later to government ministries and various NGO organizations, which used the developed program structure and further disseminated the Foundation’s “Guide for Young Entrepreneurs”. The second major Foundation activity devoted special attention to talented students (in their final year of study) by offering them specialized courses on new technologies unavailable at local universities. These courses were organized through the Foundation's Centre of Technology Excellence and in cooperation with a number of international universities.
In 2004, the MET Foundation registered the Sarajevo School of Science and Technology (SSST) as the first private non-profit University in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It draws on the resources of its academic, technical, legal, financial and administrative staff as well as the university's specialist Institutes and Faculties to support its activities and projects.
