Educational Aims of the Module

  • Business enterprise takes place within a general and wide-ranging legal environment. Rules of law, which businesses must comply with, shape business strategies and practices.
  • Therefore, students of business should have more than more than a passing knowledge of major legal rules and procedures which impact upon business activities.
  • This module introduces students to major rules of law which govern all aspects of business, from the formation of a company, hiring employees and acquiring assets through entering contractual obligations with business partners to competition and customer protection laws which shape business strategies and practices.
  • The module starts with a brief description of the legal system, types of business entities and corporate governance. In the second stage, the module defines the most important terms and principles of business contract.
  • In the final part the module covers rules of law regulating sales of goods/services, patents/copyrights, credit transactions, agency conflicts and employment.

  • Conceptual understanding of the areas of law which affect business activities

  • Identify the key issues and theoretical debates surrounding the functions and objectives of business law.

  • Critically analyse the law in the context of the business environment.

  • Apply the law to factual situations which may arise in a business setting

  • Ability to critically analyse legal issues when making business decisions

  • Ability to use and compare alternative methods to judge the reliability of data and choose the one with the most relevant results;
