Educational Aims of the Module

  • The aim of this module is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts and principles of databases, particularly relational databases.
  • It leads students through the process and techniques of database modelling, design, implementation and management.
  • It also provides students with hands-on practice and skills in developing a database system using commercial DBMS software.
 

Module Outline/Syllabus

  • Introduction: data, file and database concepts; database management system (DBMS); types of databases; database life-cycle;

  • Relational database: tables; keys; relationships; relational algebra;

  • Data modelling: data abstraction; conceptual data models; entity; attribute; relationship; entity-relationship (E-R) modelling technique; E-R diagram;

  • Database design: design problems; first, second and third normal forms; normalisation process;

  • Database implementation: structured query language (SQL), data definition and manipulation commands; queries and reports;

Module Outcomes

Intended Learning Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts and principles

  • Build conceptual data models for a variety of business scenarios

  • Use different database modelling and design techniques

  • Develop a working database application using a commercial DBMS software

Teaching and Learning Strategy:

  • Lectures on module material (ILO: 1-4)

  • Tutorials use examples and solutions to illustrate the theory

  • Lab exercises with appropriate tools and practice problems (ILO: 1-4)

  • Independent study is based on the recommended text

  • Group project enables students to develop communication skills and apply what they have learnt in the course to a practical problem (ILO: 1-4)

Assessment Strategy:

  • Midterm exam and Final exam (ILO: 1-5)

  • Course projects (ILO:1-4)

  • Continuous assessment tests (ILO: 1-5)

Practical Skills:

  • Advanced use of Microsoft Access in generating financial reports and providing necessary data to the upper Management for proper decision making

  • Advanced use of Microsoft Excel in generating adequate visual presentations of the data flow within the company

  • Interpret and demonstrate understanding of DB development methodologies

  • Practical demonstrations (PS: 1-3)

  • Interactive lectures (PS:1-3)(PS: 1-3)

  • Lab exercises with tutor-lead support
  • Group project assignment (PS: 1,2)
