SSST Students and Professors Visit Heidelberg Materials Cement Kakanj: Driving Innovation for a Sustainable Industry

As part of the Green Industry Innovation Accelerator (GIIA) project, students and professors from the Sarajevo School of Science and Technology (SSST) visited Heidelberg Materials Cement in Kakanj, with the aim of strengthening collaboration between academia and industry in advancing the green transition of the construction materials sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

During the visit, winning teams from the GIIA Hackathon presented their digital and sustainable solutions developed in response to real industry challenges. Particular attention was given to the C-PASS and OPTI-FURNACE AI projects, which demonstrate how innovative approaches and the application of technology can contribute to emissions reduction and long-term sustainability. In the context of increasingly demanding green transition requirements and new regulatory frameworks such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), collaborations of this kind are becoming essential for building a competitive and responsible industry. By directly involving students in solving real-world business challenges, SSST further reinforces its commitment to education that aligns with modern trends and labour market needs. The visit to Heidelberg Materials Cement serves as a strong example of how synergy between universities and industry can accelerate innovation and create tangible impact in the process of sustainable transformation. The “Green Industry Innovation Accelerator (GIIA)” project is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with financial support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.
