On 24 April in Berlin, we bid farewell to Professor Dr Christian Schwarz-Schilling.
Professor Schwarz-Schilling was one of our own — as a professor at SSST and, more importantly, as someone who proved through his actions what it means to stand with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In 1992, he resigned from the German government in protest over its inaction in the face of war and atrocities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a decision that reflected rare moral clarity and courage. He later continued his engagement with Bosnia and Herzegovina in a number of important roles, serving first as a mediator and subsequently as the High Representative. His commitment to the country remained steadfast. At SSST, Professor Schwarz-Schilling shared with our students of politics and international relations a wealth of knowledge, experience, and integrity. In recognition of his lasting contribution, SSST established the Christian Schwarz-Schilling Professorship in International Relations and Politics. On behalf of SSST, the current Chair of the Professorship, Assistant Professor Adnan Huskić, attended the funeral, alongside our former professor and current Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to Germany, Damir Arnaut. In honour of Professor Schwarz-Schilling’s dedication and work, SSST will continue to develop the Christian Schwarz-Schilling Chair as a centre of research and excellence. Dear Professor Schwarz-Schilling, thank you. May you rest in peace. The memory of your life and work endures — in your family, in this institution, and in all those whose lives you touched.
