“Sustainable Pharmacy 2025” Conference Highlights the Role of Pharmacists in Safeguarding Health and the Environment
The first conference in Bosnia and Herzegovina dedicated to sustainable pharmacy – “Sustainable Pharmacy 2025” – was held on May 22, 2025, at SSST University in Sarajevo. Organized by the Department of Pharmacy at the Sarajevo Medical School, the event gathered over 80 participants from academia, the pharmaceutical industry, and healthcare institutions, and was supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Science.
The conference was officially opened by Prof. Dr. Tarik Čatić and Prof. Dr. Semira Galijašević, Head of the Department of Pharmacy, who emphasized the importance of redefining the pharmacist’s role in today’s society.
“The Sustainable Pharmacy conference represents a key platform for redefining the role of pharmacists in modern society, offering space for the exchange of knowledge, ideas, and best practices among academia, industry experts, and decision-makers. At a time when we are facing the growing ecological footprint of the pharmaceutical industry, such gatherings allow us to explore and apply concrete solutions that combine science, ethics, and social responsibility,” she stated.
The conference program included a series of expert lectures and panel discussions focusing on crucial aspects of sustainability in pharmaceutical practice – from green chemistry, waste and packaging management, to education, economic policy, and the pharmacist’s role in a responsible healthcare system.
Through a multidisciplinary approach, participants highlighted the need to integrate sustainability principles into education and daily professional practice, preparing pharmacists to face the complex challenges of global health and climate change.
The conference concluded with a clear message: sustainable pharmacy is not a passing trend but a lasting value and responsibility – toward patients, the profession, and the planet. The knowledge and ideas shared during this event represent a vital step toward concrete changes across institutions, industry, and education.
