All our master degrees are validated by the University of Buckingham. This means that, besides a degree from Sarajevo School of Science and Technology, students also get a degree from the University of Buckingham.

MASTER IN SCIENCE (MSc) BY RESEARCH

The taught MSc programmes have two components:

  • The taught component which consist of modules aimed to provide background in a discipline the programme specializes in.
  • The research components aimed at enabling students to undertake research and write their own research paper. This is the final component which starts after completion of the taught component and is carried out under guidance provided by an assigned supervisor.

The MSc by Research programme is significantly different than the above described taught programme. It does not have the taught component - this means there are no regular classes, no pre-specified list of compulsory modules and no exams.

In other words, MSc by Research has only one component: the research component. Students are assigned supervisors on the first day of the programme and all activities are focused on the supporting students to undertake quality research.

The programme is designed for self-motivated students primarily interested in research and an excellent stepping-stone for doctoral studies.

Instead of the taught modules, the core activities in the programme are:

  • Analysis of existing research papers (assigned by the supervisor) and writing of short exploratory papers related to a chosen research topic.
  • Seminars and workshops aimed at enabling students to master methods and methodologies required to carry out their research projects. These events will inevitably cover the theoretical background of research methods but will focus of the practical aspects such as using professional econometrics/data analysis software and coding if necessary. Depending on specific research project requirements, these events may cover basic methods for cross-sectional and time-series data analysis as well as more advanced methods such as the threshold regression, switching regime models, GARCH methods etc.
  • A supervised research project enabling students to undertake their own research project which typically involves:
    • A comprehensive review of the existing literature aimed at formulating research questions and developing testable hypotheses
    • Designing a research methodology to test developed hypotheses
    • Collection of empirical data required of test hypotheses
    • Data analysis
    • Interpretation of results and their implications

The research project results in a research paper (a thesis) not exceeding 100 pages of double-spaced typescript. A research paper or thesis is supposed to demonstrate a student's systematic understanding of the chosen research subject and ability to conduct a sophisticated analysis which is at the forefront of the academic discipline.
