Guest lectures and discussions with prominent members of political, academic and business life in the region and the world are our University’s tradition. This last Friday in the month of May, we had a great honour to have with us Ms. Sonja Biserko, the President of Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia and a long-time activist in fighting for public recognition of war crimes committed during the nineties in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Ms. Biserko held a lecture titled “Region and European Perspective” for many Political Science and International Relations, Economics and Business, Computer Sciences, even Medical students. While focusing on the role of Serbia in the stability of the region, Ms. Biserko has once again indicated the problematic inflammatory rhetoric which found its way once again in the region, and has been emphasising the importance of greater social engagement of students as a key political factor in creating the social scene in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Balkan region as well. Following the lecture, students wanted to know what would be the specific role of young people in fighting nationalism and fascism in their local communities, and have talked about the examples of student body rising against the nationalistic rhetoric of their ruling political parties. Prof Dr Serbo Rastoder from the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Montenegro, as well as Dr Nevenka Tromp from the University of Amsterdam and the author of the recently published book titled “Death in Hague: The Unfinished Trial for Slobodan Milosevic”, were special guests of the lecture.
