Welcome to SSST's Faculty of Medicine - Sarajevo Medical School!
SSST’S Medical program is a twelve-semester (six-year) Medical Study program in the English language. Upon graduating from this program, students receive a Doctor of Medicine degree (MD).
The pre-clinical portion of the program utilizes the most modern laboratories, boasting state-of-the-art, and cutting-edge technology located on the SSST campus. At the same time, the clinical part of the study program requires a hands-on, practical approach. We introduce first-year students to emergency medicine as one of their primary courses immediately teaching them how to successfully interact with patients.
This program entails all aspects of clinical practice in an ample amount. Next to the required practical component of this study, students are required to have 75 hours of summer practice as well. Our faculty conducts this study program in small groups, allowing for individual attention towards students, and ensuring a thorough understanding of all medical procedures and skills. We work with 14 medical institutions in primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare within Sarajevo and throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina including hospitals, clinical centers, ER and healthcare centers.
At Sarajevo Medical School, we train our students not only in the science of preventing, diagnosing, and treating disease but also in the art of effective communication with patients. From the earliest days of their medical school career, students begin working with patients in a professional medical environment. Our aim is to prepare physicians to excel in the ever-changing world of modern medicine. We have had many international students and recent graduates from all around the world such as the USA, Norway, Syria, Slovenia, Bangladesh, Sweden, Portugal, Austria, Croatia, Italy, Germany, and the UAE.
Our faculty consists of both expert professors from Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as international professors from Europe and the USA, with visiting lecturers well experienced in renowned clinics throughout the world, providing our students with a resourceful group of medical experts and healthcare professionals widely proficient in all fields of medicine and medical procedures.
Our faculty works with students in small groups, allowing for an individualized approach while conducting progress report monitoring and academic assessments for a better academic understanding of continual student progress. The study program also makes use of the Innovation Lab located on SSST campus by merging medicine with developing digital healthcare through startups and programs, introducing students to modern medical trends and making them especially competent in establishing themselves as medical professionals and industry experts of the future.
The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 assesses the examinee's ability to apply medical knowledge and patient-centered skills. USMLE Step 1 is the first of three exams that must be successfully passed by any examinee wishing to obtain a license to practice medicine in the US. Students are eligible to take USMLE Step 1 after completing the 2nd year of Sarajevo Medical School. The obtained score is an important determinant of future medical residency in the US.
At SSST we have been conducting USMLE preparatory course for five years. Our lecturers include doctors that have passed the USMLE and are practicing medicine in the US as well as our own students who have successfully passed USMLE’s first step.
In addition, USMLE-style questions are incorporated into different courses and examination practices and our students are well-trained to comprehend the specific style of these questions.
Sarajevo Medical School registered in the World Directory of Medical Schools
The Faculty of Medicine – Sarajevo Medical School of the University Sarajevo School of Science and Technology – is recognized by the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER), incorporated as a foundation of ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates), and has been registered in its World Directory of Medical Schools.
The mission of the World Directory of Medical Schools is to list all medical schools in the world, and include accurate and comprehensive information on each school. The validated information in the World Directory will enable students, faculty, medical regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders in society to access information proving that a doctor has attended a genuine medical school of a good standard, and has demonstrated the competence required to become a certified medical doctor.
Only medical faculties registered in the World Directory are internationally recognized and validated. Their graduates are able to have international careers, and get internships, work, or continue their studies in the USA, Canada, etc.
Our Sarajevo Medical School is one of the two medical faculties from BiH registered in the World Directory.

Entrance examinations for Sarajevo Medical School
Entrance examinations start at the University SSST’s premises (Hrasnička cesta 3a, Ilidža, Sarajevo; tel: +387 33 975 001/002), from April to September every year. Follow entrance exam appointments here.
Prospective candidates take examinations in English, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Candidates transferring from other medical schools in the Balkan region (transfer students) only take a test in English.
The online entrance exam procedure is available for candidates who are residing outside Bosnia and Herzegovina. Please contact our Registry Office for more information regarding this.
