University SSST is proud to present our new project under the title “Microbiome in autism” that aims to analyze differences in the composition and structure of gut microbiome among children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders and neurotypical children. This is the first project in Bosnia and Herzegovina to use next-generation sequencing and bioinformatic data analysis towards this goal. The project is based on mounting scientific evidence on gut dysbiosis as one of the factors that contribute to the development of autism-like behaviors and associated gastrointestinal problems. Its results will add to the existing findings in the field and improve understanding of autism spectrum disorders of children in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Further analyses of data using machine learning, a branch of artificial intelligence, will result in the development of algorithms that aim to indicate the presence of autism spectrum disorders based on gut microbiome composition. This approach has the potential to advance the early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders.
Our co-funding partner of the project is the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Canton Sarajevo that has recognized the importance of scientific research on the topic.
