Today, we were honoured to be visited by the United Kingdom Prime Minister’s Special Representative on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict, H.E. Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, as well as the representatives of the UK Embassy to Bosnia-Herzegovina. The purpose of the visit was to welcome the establishment of the Gender Equality Office at the University SSST, being a part of the UNIGEM (University and Gender Mainstreaming) project initiative, coordinated by professor Jasminka Hasić Telalović from the SSST side. H.E. Lord Ahmad briefly addressed our students, explaining the importance of gender mainstreaming on all education levels and the impact we have through reconfiguring our own preconceived notions on gender and gender roles. Our students had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the role of the academic community and higher education in general in this important undertaking.
With seventeen other universities from Bosnia-Herzegovina and TPO Foundation as the project leader, the University SSST will be focusing on establishing its Gender Equality Plan, as well standardizing the practice of questioning, reassessing and essentially changing our still very much patriarchal society, and encouraging our students to do the same, with British Embassy Sarajevo as our valued partner.
