It was a true honor and a privilege to have with us the official delegation from Malaysia, led by former Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad, attending the ceremonial inauguration of the Mahathir-Thatcher Chair in Statecraft. The celebrated statesman and one of the most influential politicians of the 20th century has been a friend and supporter to SSST since its establishment; the lectures he delivered to students during his last visit in 2013 are still fondly remembered. Alongside late Baroness Margaret Thatcher, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, he previously supported the initiative for the first private university in Bosnia and Herzegovina, offering a new vision of education in Bosnia and Herzegovina, on par with renowned global universities.
"I am delighted to return to this university, and it is an honor for me to witness your development and the nurturing of the idea of continuous progress in science and knowledge. Although the world is currently overshadowed by various conflicts and turmoil on multiple fronts, what remains unquestionable as our legacy is education and young people as agents of change. I am pleased to be here with you today, and I will continue to follow your dedication to innovation, new technologies, and ideas that I am confident will find fertile ground at this university," said Mahathir in his address to students and professors.
The delegation also visited the monument erected in honor of Mahathir for his contribution to an independent Bosnia and Herzegovina during wartime. The monument was erected in 2020, along with busts honoring Madeline Albright, Paddy Ashdown, Alois Mock, and Tadeusz Mazowiecki, as a gesture of gratitude from Sarajevans.
The two-day visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the SSST University as the primary focal point, will conclude with formal receptions at the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as meetings with dignitaries and officials from the Bosnian-Herzegovinian political scene.
