Educational Aims of the Module

  • The overall aim of this course is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts and pr inciples of information systems and Microsoft Office tools. In particular, it introduces the basic Information Technology (IT) concepts such as software, databases and networks.
  • The course will also introduce Internet research methods and skills which aim to structure how students search for information on the world wide web.
  • Furthermore the course will provide an understanding of the role and value of Information Systems (IS) in business, describes different types of IS and their functionalities, and the methods and tools used to develop and manage Information Systems in organisations.
 

Module Outline/Syllabus

  • Introduction:  Information Systems and Systems in Organisations. Office tools in the workplace.
  • Information Technology Concepts: Hardware; Software; Data storage and retrieval; Telecommunications and Networks; the Internet, Intranets and Extranets.
  • Business Information Systems:  E-Commerce; Transaction Processing (TP) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems; Decision Support Systems (DSS); Specialised Business Information Systems.
  • System Development: Focus on user driven systems development.
  • IS in Business and Society:  Security, Privacy, and Ethical Issues
