Educational Aims of the Module

  • This module is designed to introduce business processes to students in operations, by providing them with concepts, techniques and tools to design, analyze and improve operational capabilities of an organization.
  • This module is International Business minor and it ensures that students have a good understanding of typical business processes and possible software solutions in operations.
  • Students will understand both the role that Enterprise Resource Planning Systems (ERPs) play in an organization and how ERP integrates main business functions/processes.
  • Teaching will be based on lectures and tutorials with planty of real-world examples.
  • During the semester, homework will be assigned that afford the student the opportunity to work through many real-life business situations using either SAP Simulation ERP or PANTHEON ERP system and explore the interaction among the different business processes.
  • The hands-on exercises, coupled with the in-class discussions of theory and practice will help prepare students for real business engagements.
 

Module Outline/Syllabus

  • Introduction: Organizations, Business Processes and Information Systems. ERP introduction.

  • Introducing the importance of software solutions in operations. Introducing typical busness processes in mids size and large organizations. Introducing Enterprise Resource Planning Systems and their importance to operations.

  • Business processes: Procurement, Fulfilment, Production, Integration of all processes.

  • Explaining physical, information and document flow in procurement and supply chain process.

  • Explaining warehouse strategies and inventory techniques.

  • Explaining physical, information and document flow in fulfilment process including customer relationship management.

  • Explaining discreet and process production process, physical, information and documents flow.

  • Explaining the integration of all above process inside organizational operations.

  • Demonstration of all operational procedures, reporting, process steps and decision making using SAP or PANTHEON system.

  • Enterprise Systems:Architecture, Types, Data, Information, Knowledge. ERP

  • Explaining existing software architectures in organizations (two-tier, three-tier, cloud). Covering organizational, master and operational types of data inside the organizations, Covering the importance of knowledge cycle and information flow. Demonstrating data flow using SAP or PANTEON systems.

  • System usage: Focus on user driven / knowledge worker usage of ERP

  • Students will be put into the position to practically perform processes using ERP system,

Module Outcomes

Intended Learning Outcomes:

  • Develop in-depth comprehension of important terms and concepts from the field of Operations Management.

  • Describe the main business processes in a given company

  • Understand and explain how main business processes are integrated in ERP.

  • Compare different ERP solutions used in today’s market, and Global vs regional ERP solutions. (SAP, ORACLE, MICROSOFT and PANTHEON)

  • Analyse sales, purchasing, accounting and production data in an ERP

  • Understand business reports from the ERP system

  • Ability to collect information from variety of sources to provide information related to solutions in unfamiliar context.

Teaching and Learning Strategy:

  • Lectures on course material (ILO 1-6)

  • Practical demonstration of software (ILO 3,4,7)

  • Hands-on exercises with ERP system (ILO 4,5,7). Purchasing, sales, production and reporting exercises in SAP or PANTHEON.

  • Group research project on topics related to Operations Management. (1-7)

  • Mid Term Exam (ILO 1, 2)

  • Final Exam (ILO1- 6)

  • Group Project – Research project in Operations Management topics(ILO 1,2,3,6,7)

  • Technical skills: ability to use Pantheon or SAP,

  • Ability to analyse business processes and their information needs

  • Explore the interaction among the different business processes and work through real-life business situations using either SAP Simulation ERP or PANTHEON ERP system.
