Educational Aims of the Module

  • The aim of the module is to introduce a range of ideas and perspectives on economic development, and some of the more common strategies and policies employed by practitioners of economic development.
  • This course requires a solid understanding of how to read and interpret statistics and national accounts, as well as a basic understanding of economic principles.
  • The module has three broad sections:
    • Analytical frameworks for understanding basic principles that enable critical assessment of alternative development policies and programs; 
    • Individual determinants and returns to investment in physical capital (infrastructure etc.), human capital (health and education), financial capital (credit markets, savings and investments levels) and
    • resource (mis)allocation, learning and coordination and their impacts on productivity, employment and growth; successes and failures of economic development efforts.

Module Outcomes

Intended Learning Outcomes:

  • To understand key economic terminology as used in the field of Economics and to be competent in the reading of economic literature

  • To notice and evaluate the interrelationships of political and economic factors and their importance for economic development.

  • Evaluate information on different theories and models of economic development.

  • Understand both macro and micro aspects of development.

  • Acquire knowledge of the impact of globalisation on the economic development of various countries.

  • Demonstrate understanding of the impact of national policies on economic development of the country and on poverty, inequality and regional development within a country.

  • Appreciation of the variety of factors influencing the path of economic development of a country.

  • Ability to question current thinking and take a part in debates on contemporary issues and topics.

  • To identify concepts and principles underlying theoretical frameworks, recognize their competing perspectives and notice possibility of new concepts within existing framework.

  • Propose different national policies as solutions for specific development problems in specific contexts.

Teaching and Learning Strategy:

  • Learning for this module will primarily be textbook based, with a limited number of additional readings for specific topics chosen by the course tutor. Teaching will be a combination of lectures and tutorial discussion groups.

    Tutorials will provide a forum for in-depth topical analysis and set class quizzes which test student subject knowledge. Students will engage in independent, guided study with the support of the course tutor.

Assessment Strategy:

  • One midterm exam and two quizzes will test if students are keeping up with the reading and course content materials, and help them focus their learning. (ILO:1-6)

  • Students will design and produce a policy brief relating to a chosen topic within economic development. (ILO: 8)

  • Final cumulative exam (ILO: 1-7,9,10)

  • Class discussion and participation. (ILO:1-10)

Practical Skills:

  • Ability to notice and comprehend complex economic and politics relationships

  • Interpret and articulate on models and theories relating to economic development

  • Understand and interpret various national policies

  • Interpret basic data relating to globalisation and present ideas in a reasoned manner.

  • Ability to apply the theory related to Economics and Politics Development to the real-life concerns.
