Educational Aims of the Module

  • The aim of this module is to introduce students to the basic concepts of management in business and in non-business areas and functions, including planning, organising, staffing, coordinating, leading, directing and controlling.
  • Students should be able to position management in a globalised world and to be able to define its meaning in modern social life, as well as being able to understand the role of management in a global organisation.

Module Outcomes

Intended Learning Outcomes:

  • To enhance comprehension of the most important terminology related to management and to understand the fundamental concepts and principles of management, including the basic roles, skills, and functions of management.

  • Evaluate approaches to management in the workplace today and explain the impact of each style on employees.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the social and economic consequences of different managerial styles.

  • Understand the basic role of management in modern organizations.

  • Recognise the importance of the manager in successful modern society.

  • To collect information from variety of sources and to provide information related to solutions from the field of management infamiliar context.

Teaching and Learning Strategy:

  • Lectures will provide core information on module material. In addition to the key text book, supplementary resources will be used, including the most recent articles. In this way, students will be able to relate the theoretical part to the current real world issues. (ILO:1-6)

  • A Group assignment will allow students to integrate theoretical concepts with their practical application (ILO: 1-6)

  • Case studies and role plays will allow students to work as a group to discuss topical material in detail.

  • Group discussions will encourage students to formulate their own arguments and engage in constructive debate (ILO: 1-6)(ILO: 1-6)

Assessment Strategy:

  • Midterm exam (ILO: 1-6)
  • Final exam (ILO: 1-6)
  • Test (ILO:1-6)

  • Group case study and presentation (ILO:1-6)

  • Continuous class participation (ILO: 1-6)

  • To recognize complex management relationships

  • To apply economic theory to real-life concerns

  • Interpret and theoretically apply different management models

  • Practical work in the business company of student's choice. Grades will depend mostly on the following: ability to find a company which will enable a student to work for 8 hours in their company, attendance, employer's feedback and student's report. (PS 1,2)
